A ROAD LESS TRAVELLED

Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBark Poet

The problem with modern society is

that we live like rats in a cage
crammed into congested streets,
and congested cities
where we become like bedsitter people –
hearing without listening,
absorbing like sponges,
the filth, degradation and ills of society.

If we wisely decided

to cut short the sojourn with ‘civilization’.
turned our back
on the black ice, pollution, stress and strain
that we inflict on ourselves and refer to as living.
Grasped a simpler concept
of life without
all the ‘necessities’ that aren’t necessary –
except in our mindset.

Then perhaps we could fall asleep in a chair –

tired from a day spent doing work
in the open air –
providing feed and sustenance for our bodies
from our own labour.
We would be healthier, fitter, happier.
In tune with nature and the seasons
as was the intention of the creator
when he created the heavens and the earth.

The finest masterpiece ever created by an artist ,

but never seen
from high rise towers,
polluted cities, rat race city streets.
Never seen by those held captive
by computer screens and technology.
Leave the bedsitter people,
the unbelievers –
Go.

Look up and be amazed
at how people across the world
can all share at the same moment
the finest masterpiece ever created by an artist.

Look up and live.
